The castle of Varengrad is the largest and most impressive on the island. It stands proudly atop a hill, overlooking the city, the sea and its inhabitants.
History
The old castle of Varengrad was built in the year 627 after the arrival of the first settlers and served as the residence for the founder of Varengrad.
In the year 736 p.A. the seat of the king of Va’ariel was transferred to the mainland of Vlethwëin and Va’ariel was established as a new duchy. Since then, the castle has served as a home for the dukes and the court.

Building
The castle is divided into two wings and has many rooms, each with its own purpose. On the first floor is the large reception hall, a grand room where banquets, guests and dignitaries are received.
In the rear part there is a library, which contains all the knowledge of the city. The north wing houses the court and on the lower floors there are rooms for the staff and guests.
The basement houses the prison and the guard quarters. Finally, the south wing accommodates the Duchess’s spacious rooms with breathtaking views of the city and beyond. The castle has been a symbol of power and prestige for centuries, and its magnificent architecture fills the islanders with pride.
With its numerous rooms, the castle is a testimony of a long and glorious history.
